A fascinating talk from Guildford u3a member Colin Rumary who, as a boy, lived in a converted industrial building on the Chilworth Gunpowder Mills estate. He describes the workings of the gunpowder factory before moving on to recount tales of his life there, including the social attitudes of a 'nice' village towards a poor working class family. Followed by tea and coffee and a chat.
Social History 2 group is hosting this talk in association with Mid Surrey Oddfellows, at their Leatherhead hall. Free entry but a small charity donation would be welcome. Donations will go to The Children’s Trust, the Mid-Surrey Oddfellows chosen charity of the year. Everyone is welcome - feel free to bring friends and neighbours!
There is a public car park opposite the Oddfellows Hall, next to the Running Horses pub, and several more car parks in Leatherhead including the multi-storey. The 478 bus from Bookham stops in Bridge Street, next stop after the Leisure Centre, and takes about 10 minutes. Or why not try booking the new Connect on-demand bus service!
We need to know numbers in advance, so please contact Michelle Howes on howes@bookhamu3a.org.uk if you would like to attend.
